Andy Warhol and Laurence Gartel are two of those select artists who were born to make and remain a part of history, raised to change the cultural and social equilibrium of a place at a particular historical moment. Gartel revealed the secrets of the Commodore Amiga to Warhol, and the two were immediately in tune, with masses of points in common between them.
The exhibition “Warhol vs Gartel. Hyp Pop” compares two artists who, albeit in different ways, including in relation to their respective historical moments, understood that it was no longer possible to interpret everyday reality, that it was impossible to innovate in the world of art using traditional methods and that a creative artist and man of his own time could not distance certain market forms from everyday life. There was no need to create ex-novo when everything already existed in and around the social and industrial spheres: it would have been enough to celebrate the figures and objects projecting them from the world of the invisible onto that of the visible. Their mission thrilled in re-presenting the ready-made, most of the time recognizable, in such a way that it could be used differently thanks to a bit of conceptual and artistic shrewdness.
Warhol and Gartel stripped the idea of authenticity and uniqueness from the work of art, radically evolving the function of art itself. Indeed, when an artistic work is reproducible, it loses its independence, conforming to a different interpretation tied not only to iconographic study of its composition but also to investigation of the expressive means used to arrive at that particular result. Their aim was to discover the truth, not reality, the essence of the world and things that could come to humankind only through mass communication. Polaroid, a recorder, Photomaton, and silkscreen for Warhol. Apple Macintosh (with the program Mac Paint), Commodore Amiga (with Deluxe Paint), the Xerox Art Color ink-jet printer, and Canon’s 760 camera, ink-jet printers and early scanners for Gartel. Methods that involved increasing use of the machine and decreasing direct and “physical” involvement of the artist.
As did Warhol, Gartel recognizes that the market is an objective necessity that needs to be explored through the constant, obsessive quest for new expressive forms and new means for communication and interaction. And also like Warhol, Gartel has an aesthetic that the market uses in the form of communication products. But not all of the elements that the two artists have in common are symmetrical and corresponding. Warhol’s Pop Art adopted an impersonal, almost maniacal way of perpetuating mass-media images fearlessly documenting, without awe or wonderment, the change in values wrought by consumer culture. Warhol’s screen print of an obsessively repeated image of a bottle of Coca Cola shows us how that object had by then become so important, with respect to other interior and spiritual values, that it was promoted as positive and winning in contemporary society. Gartel’s Hyper Pop is fueled by images with a place in the collective imaginary, but does not limit itself to mythologizing them, instead projecting them into possible futures, imaginative scenarios, and dream-like dimensions – contexts that, although far removed from what we believe is real, seem strangely hyper-familiar, hyper-evocative, hyper-suggestive, hyper-allusive, hyper-everyday, hyper-communicative, hyper-imaginative, and hyper-contemporary.
